Medjugorje

Since June 24, 1981, six young people in this village in Herzegovina have reported apparitions of Our Lady, calling the world to conversion, prayer and peace.

The Visionaries

The six visionaries

On June 24, 1981, the Virgin Mary appeared to two teenage girls on Mt Podbrdo in Medjugorje, then in Yugoslavia. Soon several other young people witnessed the apparition. On the following day, four of the visionaries, Mirjana, Ivanka, Ivan and Vicka, saw the beautiful Lady again. Vicka ran to get her friend Marija, and little Jakov followed. They were all carried quickly to the Lady (Gospa) and fell to their knees. Three of them have had daily apparitions from that day to this. The other three, Mirjana, Jakov and Ivanka, received ten secrets from Gospa and ceased daily apparitions; they now have annual apparitions.

Ivan Dragicevic

Ivan Dragicevic was a very shy 16-year-old when the apparitions began. He was born on May 25, 1965, in Bijakovici, in the parish of Medjugorje. He entered the seminary soon after the visions began, but returned home after a short time.

In a special revelation granted by Our Lady, Ivan was shown his whole life until his death, which has made him deeply dependent on her guidance.

He is married to Laureen Murphy of Boston, Massachusetts. They have four children and one grandchild, and they live half the year in Medjugorje and half in Boston.

Ivan’s prayer mission is to pray for priests, youth and families.

Ivanka Ivankovic-Elez

Ivanka Ivankovic-Elez was 15 years old and the first to see Our Lady as she and Mirjana walked down the dirt road near what is now Apparition Hill. She was born on June 21, 1966, in Bijakovici, in the parish of Medjugorje. Her mother died the month before and, though very shy, she was the first to address Our Lady on June 25, asking for news of her mother.

Ivanka had daily apparitions (including four opportunities to see her mother) until May 7, 1985, when she became the second of the visionaries to receive all 10 secrets. Our Lady told her she would have annual apparitions on June 25, the anniversary of the apparitions.

Ivanka is married and has three married children and six grandchildren. She lives with her family in Medjugorje.

Jakov Colo

Jakov Colo was only 10 years old when he first saw Our Lady. He was born on March 6, 1971, in Sarajevo; his mother had returned home to Medjugorje when his father abandoned them. Two years after the apparitions began, his mother died and he became an orphan. He lived with his uncle and was raised by the villagers.

When the other visionaries left Medjugorje for additional schooling, Vicka became his special spiritual guardian and it was to the two of them that Our Lady showed visions of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory. Jakov inspired many to believe in the apparitions early on due to his diligence, prayerfulness and joy at such a young age. He had daily apparitions from June 25, 1981, to September 12, 1998, when he also was given the 10th secret, while speaking in Tallahassee, Florida. Our Lady told him that for the rest of his life he would have an annual apparition, on Christmas Day. To his great consolation she always arrives carrying the Infant Jesus.

Jakov is married to Annalisa Barozzi, of Italy. They have three married children and two grandchildren, and they live in Medjugorje.

Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti

Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti was also 16 when the apparitions began. She was born on April 1, 1965, in Bijakovici, in the parish of Medjugorje. One of six children, she was a close neighbor and friend of Vicka’s.

The messages for the parish of Medjugorje were entrusted to Marija every Thursday, beginning March 1, 1984, as Our Lady began spiritually to form the community for its special role in her plans for this center of peace. On January 25, 1987, the messages were directed to the whole world, and again Marija was the official spokesperson. These messages continue to this day on the 25th of every month.

Marija considered a religious vocation but was prompted to consider the ground for all holy vocations, a good religious family. Also, because the visions continued, she felt called to be able to witness to them. Along with Ivan, she helped form the youth prayer group that meets on the hillsides in Medjugorje.

She received three special gifts from Our Lady, the first, after one apparition, the ability instantly to understand and speak Italian perfectly, helpful since she would marry an Italian. Second, a special blessing to be passed on to unbelievers for conversion. The third, a gift of love to give to others from Our Lady. Marija has received nine of the 10 secrets and continues to have daily apparitions.

She is married to Paolo Lunetti and they have four sons. With her family, she lives in Italy and in Medjugorje.

Mirjana Dragicevic-Soldo

Mirjana Dragicevic-Soldo was one of the first to see Our Lady on June 24, 1981. She was 16 years old when the apparitions began. Mirjana was born on March 18, 1965, in Sarajevo, where she lived with her parents, visiting her grandparents in Medjugorje during summer vacation from school. Although she returned to Sarajevo, she received daily apparitions until December 25, 1982.

On that day, she was the first to be given the 10 secrets and is entrusted with the mission to share these secrets with a priest of her choosing who, after 10 days of prayer and fasting, will relay them to the world three days before the first secret unfolds. Our Lady told her that she would have annual apparitions on March 18 and when she particularly needed Our Lady.

Mirjana began to hear Our Lady's voice interiorly and prayed with her for unbelievers. On August 2, 1987, she was able to see Our Lady in private visions, which she was permitted to share with the public beginning February 2, 1997. She continued to have these apparitions on the 2nd of the month until March 2, 2020, when she was told that would be her last monthly apparition.

Mirjana is married to her childhood friend, Marko Soldo, who is the nephew of Fr. Slavko Barbaric (deceased). Together they have two daughters, both married, and two grandchildren, and they live in Medjugorje.

The prayer intention that Our Lady confided to Mirjana: For unbelievers, those who have not yet come to know the love of God.

Vicka Ivankovic-Mijatovic

Vicka Ivankovic-Mijatovic was the eldest of the visionaries at 16 when the apparitions began and was the most vivacious of the group. She was born on September 9, 1964, in Bijakovici, in the parish of Medjugorje. One of eight children, she was known for her outgoing nature and unceasing smile even before the visions began.

At Our Lady’s request, Vicka stayed in Medjugorje when the others left to attend school elsewhere. She continued to live the simple peasant life of the village and became the unofficial greeter of the pilgrims who began to gather. She also guided Jakov under Our Lady’s guidance.

After a vision in which she and Jakov witnessed Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, Vicka volunteered to take on extra suffering for the conversion of sinners. She has suffered greatly through the years, but always maintains her radiant smile for visitors.

In 1982, she also was commissioned by Our Lady to transcribe a book that Our Lady dictated about her life on earth. These writings will be made public in Our Lady’s time and at her discretion.

Vicka has received nine secrets and continues to have daily apparitions. Vicka married Marijo Mijatovic in 2002, and they have two children. After years of serving Medjugorje pilgrims, she now lives a more private life with her family in Krehin Gradac near Medjugorje.

Tools for conversion

The Five Stones

Fr Jozo Zovko, OFM, pastor of St James when the apparitions began, named five tools Our Lady gives us for conversion, like the five stones David gathered to face Goliath.

Written by Triumph Pilgrimages, April 2, 2019.

Our Lady has come to Medjugorje to call the world, each of us, one by one, to conversion. According to Collins American Dictionary, “Conversion is the act or process of changing something into a different state or form.” If Our Lady is calling you now, it is your time to come, to change. Our Lady knows conversion does not come easily. That is why she has been appearing in Medjugorje all these many years, to call us, to teach us, to reinforce us. She is giving us the means to change and, by at least 1989, Fr Jozo Zovko, OFM, pastor of St. James Church when the apparitions began, had identified five tools Our Lady gave to help — he called them the five stones of Medjugorje. These five stones, he told us, are reminiscent of the five smooth stones David gathered to help him slay Goliath as told in 1 Samuel 17. There, Goliath was a giant among giants from whom armed men hid in fear. The weapons Our Lady has given us are to aid us in our conversion, but our Goliaths are different today. They may be addictions, broken relationships, financial problems, physical or mental health issues, lack of hope, fear, loneliness, bitterness, confusion — so many things that keep us from the peace of God.

The five stones of Medjugorje help us address our personal Goliaths and in so doing join us with the thousand-fold army of pilgrims who have returned from this holy place united in spirit, united under Our Lady for Our Lord, united to slay the true Goliath that threatens the world and all of God’s magnificent creation. Although they are sometimes given in a different order, the five stones of Medjugorje identified by Fr. Jozo are Prayer, Fasting, the Mass, the Bible and Confession.

Prayer with the Heart

Of the five stones, Our Lady has spoken most frequently and urgently about prayer. Prayer is simply talking to and listening for God — the beginning of all good things. How can we be a friend of God if we don’t talk to Him? The Holy Rosary is a powerful prayer because with it we walk through the New Testament with Our Lady. “Dear children! Today I wish to call you to pray, pray, pray! In prayer you shall perceive the greatest joy and the way out of every situation that has no exit…” (March 28, 1985). “…Pray, and let the Rosary always be in your hands as a sign to Satan that you belong to me.” (February 25, 1989).

Pray! Pray! Pray!

Fasting

Before He started His public ministry, Our Lord fasted for 40 days. In Mark 9:29 Jesus tells the Apostles that certain “evil spirits can only be removed by prayer and fasting.” Fasting gives us clarity of mind, of intention. It strengthens self-discipline, offers sacrifice for our and others’ sins and disposes us for the graces God wishes to bestow on us. Our Lady has said: “The best fast is on bread and water. Through fasting and prayer, one can stop wars, one can suspend the natural laws of nature. …” (July 21, 1982). She has asked us to particularly fast on Wednesdays, the day of the Lord’s betrayal, and on Fridays, the day of His crucifixion.

The Mass

The elements of the Mass are 2000 years old. We don’t just live with stories of an ancient Christ Who lived long ago. We have direct contact with Him now, today, at Mass. This is our uniquely Catholic way to praise and thank God unlike any other way. We hear His words; we take Him into our bodies in such an intimate way that He can bless us and change us wholly. There is nothing like it in the world! It is God’s great gift to us. Our Lady says, “Dear children! God wants to make you holy. Therefore, through me He is inviting you to complete surrender. Let Holy Mass be your life. …” (April 25, 1988).

Let Holy Mass be your life!

The Bible

The Bible is the story of God’s love for us, His longing for us throughout all of history, His willingness to sacrifice everything for our salvation. Every struggle we encounter has been lived before in the Bible. The Bible is our family history; our true DNA is there. Our future is foretold. The Bible is our guidebook for eternal life. Our Lady has asked us to keep the Bible in a prominent place in our homes and to read it daily.

Confession

Confession is a critical step in restoring and improving our relationship with God. It unclogs the arteries of the soul and allows all the graces that God wants to give us to flow in. Confession is a healing sacrament in which Jesus Himself forgives us, using the hands and the words of the priest. It takes humility of heart to enter the confessional — humility is the first thing God asks of us. He will do the rest. Our Lady says, “Dear children! Open your heart to God’s mercy …The heavenly Father desires to deliver each of you from the slavery of sin. Therefore, little children, make good use of this time and through meeting with God in confession, leave sin and decide for holiness. Do this out of love for Jesus, who redeemed you all with his blood, that you may be happy and in peace. …” (February 25, 2007).

Fr. Jozo tells us to gather these “five stones” up, as if in a little pouch, and make them our own. Medjugorje is the place to start, to re-equip our lives for eternity, our final destination. These “stones” are the most important items to take home from your pilgrimage and the true treasure to help you live what you receive from this miraculous land.

Confess your sins!

“Do whatever He tells you.”
Mary at Cana, John 2:5

Our Lady’s messages

Her latest message, September 25, 2026

“Dear children! May this time be a time of prayer for peace. I am calling you to renew in your families the prayer of the Rosary for my intentions, so that I may be able to multiply your prayers and intercede for you before the Most High, [for Him] to heed your prayers and to give you peace. I am with you and like never before I pray for you and with you, my little children. Thank you for having responded to my call.”
